"Methods and hypotheses in ASL, from images to physiology"
by Prof. Xavier Golay, Chair of the MR Neurophysics and Translational Neuroscience - UCL Institute of Neurology - National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery - London
Summary :
Arterial spin labelling (ASL) is a method to measure brain perfusion, which is by definition the steady state delivery of nutrient to an organ through the blood. Within the last two decades, this method has moved from the laboratory and is on the verge of becoming accepted clinically by a wider and wider number of clinicians. Yet, not all ASL pulse sequences are equivalent, and many of them can be used only under strict observance of basic assumptions.
This lecture will go over the main ASL pulse sequences and discuss their potential application and drawbacks in clinical and basic neuroscience.
This talk will take place in the Auditoire Jéquier-Doge - PMU - CHUV-BH08 in Lausanne, on March 23th (5:00 to 6:00pm).

Seminar at CIBM by Dr. Benito de Celis Alonso (September 2nd, 2008)
"Imaging cortical plasticity using a rat whisker model and BOLD fMRI"
by Dr. Benito de Celis Alonso - MRC Centre for Neurodegeneration Research - Institute of Psychiatry - King's College London.
Summary:
A large part of the neocortex is given over to topographic representations of sensory inputs and motor outputs termed cortical maps. fMRI is a non-invasive method used to know which cortical maps change their activity during a given task. fMRI can detect reorganization in adult human motor cortex and somatosensory cortex following learning but does it work in animal models?
Experience-dependent plasticity of cortical maps appears at all ages in animal models. Here, we examine whether plasticity of rat whisker representations can be imaged using blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) fMRI. We also present a whole series of findings related to the imaging of plasticity in rat whisker models.
