Overall goal

The CIBM aims to advance our understanding of biomedical processes in health and disease, focusing on mechanisms of normal functioning, pathogenic mechanisms, characterization of disease onset prior to structural damage, metabolic and functional consequences of gene expression, and non-invasive insights into disease processes under treatment. The research will use model systems ranging from transgenic animals to human patients ("from mouse to man") and foster multi-disciplinary collaboration between basic science, biomedical science and clinical applications.

History of the CIBM

This center is the result of a major research and teaching initiative of the partners in the Science-Vie-Société (SVS) project, namely the Université de Genève (UniGE), the Université de Lausanne (UNIL) and the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), as well as the corresponding University Hospitals, the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) and les Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève (HUG).

The central concept of the CIBM is the establishment of a common center to be shared by the five founding institutions (Hôpital Universitaire de Genève, Hôpital Universitaire de Lausanne) for the development of new research projects and enhancement of exisiting projects.

Establishing projects with CIBM

The overall goal of the CIBM is to foster state-of-the-art applications of biomedical imaging and in the context of biomedical applications to further advance the technological development and vice-versa. The CIBM acts as a collaborative partner embedded in a research network and is a research partnership of the founding institutions. Access to the CIBM is designed to ensure optimal and fair use of the resources, both instrumentation and human capital. To ensure this, the following rules have been agreed upon for colaborators from the founding institutions:

  • Collaborator contacts Investigator(s) at the CIBM, to discuss project, its goal and suitability within the overall mission and strategic goal of the CIBM.
  • This contact leads to an internal discussion of the project at the CIBM and further contact(s) with the Collaborator.
  • Before the study can be initiated, a written protocol is generated to request access to and resources from the CIBM, this will be evaluated and the required and/or available resources defined.

The CIBM is committed to support pilot projects to help collaborators and CIBM investigators to leverage extra-mural funding.

For researchers wishing to establish a project with the CIBM

If you are sure, which core is appropriate for your research, contact the respective core director (see panel on the left). Otherwise, contact the director of the CIBM by email using info[at]cibm.ch.
We are always happy to assist you to the best of our means.
